Cambodia, the center of the Khmer empire between 800 and 1400 AD, has some of the most impressive temples in Southeast Asia. The most famous is the extraordinary site at Angkor Wat, near SiemrΘab. During the war it was controlled by the Khmer Rouge, who threatened any visitors with attack. Visitors are now allowed in small numbers; 3,000 visited the site in 1993.
Once basic infrastructure is in place and the political situation has stabilized, Cambodia has considerable tourism potential. It currently attracts adventurous, independent travelers. Tourists are occasionally kidnapped.
